Miguel Bernal is a highly recognized batalero (one who plays the bata) from Havana, Cuba. He was the principal percussionist for Havana based Afro Cuban folkloric ballet "Raices Profundas" for 20 years. Miguel has toured throughout the globe with internationally recognized Cuban percussionists and dancers. Teaching and giving percussion clinics is a facet of Miguel's life that he enjoys. A founder of Humboldt University's "Afro Cuba Camp," Miguel teaches workshops with the cream of the crop every summer, where percussion and dance are the focus. Top ranked by government officials, Miguel received 1st place in "Festival of the Tambor," an international percussion contest in 2006. Recently Miguel and local Cuban performers performed "Afro Cuban Show" at schools, spotlighting dances of the Orishas, and rumba.Miguel has been featured on CDs such as "Drum Jam," "Caramelo," and "It's Heaven I Surmise."
