MamaCita, a mother's cooperative in the arts, was created to support female artists.  MamaCita members Brenda Howell, Janice Hayes-Cha, Julie Mann, Kimberly Mehler and Karen Hunter McLaughlin will participate in this project.  These accomplished artists have varied backgrounds in sculpture, jewelry-making, painting, mural arts and mixed media.  This group has won an Art and Change Grant award from the Leeway Foundation to create this art.

MamaCita's inspiration and partner in this project is Mothers in Charge (MIC). MIC is a grassroots, nonprofit organization created by and for women who have endured the loss of a child to violence in our city.  Dorothy Johnson-Speight is the group's executive director, and created the group after her son was fatally shot over a parking space dispute in 2001.  Mothers in Charge and Dorothy have won numerous awards and citations both locally and nationally for their violence prevention and mentoring efforts.
