The Temple of Awareness
- Architecture & Design
In 2014, Utah experienced a very traumatic event at our regional Burning Man event, Element 11. After lighting the main effigy, a participant ran in to the bonfire. Over 1,000 people witnessed this event first-hand.
The outpouring of support we received from around the world was tremendous! During a very difficult time, this made us feel that we were not alone and helped get us through it. Since then, our community has lost many loved ones to suicide. The builders of that celebratory effigy art project named Sparky continue to be greatly impacted by this event.
The road to healing has led us to form the Utah Builders Community. The Utah Builders Community is a collective of artists, technicians, dreamers and builders that create healing spaces at our local events. We are ready to give back to the larger community that has been there for us.
The Temple of Awareness at Burning Man will be a beautiful place for contemplation and healing. The structure will stand approx. 40 feet tall and 55 feet wide, and is a catenary dome with decorative wing-like elements that bring it to life, reaching up towards the sky. It is made primarily from Douglas fir and plywood that will be stained with a natural aging patina and copper highlights. The centerpiece will be a harmonic sculpture chandelier hanging inside. Several altar spaces will be located in the temple for visitors to leave writings or memories. The space is meant to invoke a feeling of calm and peace upon entering.
The Temple of Awareness will be built in Salt Lake City, UT and assembled on Playa. This is the largest structure our team has ever gifted to Black Rock City and we need your help. Our total projected budget is $43,000; Burning Man has been kind enough to give us an honorarium art grant and we have raised funds from our local community through events and donations. We are asking the Hatchfund community to help us with the remaining funds needed to complete this project - $11,000.
Your contributions will support things like build site rent, insurance, lighting, fuel, tools, safety and leave no trace supplies, and transportation of the temple to the Playa. Should we overfund our project, additional funds will provide support for more interactive art, altar spaces, and lighting.
Thank you so very much for your support! See you on the Playa!
