ReBirth's: Arts Intensive (R.A.I.)

R.A.I is an after-school and summer arts training program, for Bridgeport youth between the ages of 10-15. Programming will take place on the newly renovated campus of Housatonic Community College.  R.A.I  will provide the opportunity for students to explore, engage, and express in the following three disciplines: dance, theatre, and film. Each discipline will be taught by teaching artists and college graduates that have been and still are working in their professions. Youth will be afforded the opportunity to participate and study in this intensive, free of charge. Each studio will have small classes, of approximately 10 to 15 youth. By limiting the intake number per studio we are insuring that no student gets over-looked, and that they are getting the best training ReBirth can provide. During the 6 weeks students will be pushed to their limits and shown that their limits are LIMITLESS.

Bridgeport needs this program because our children are dying, families are falling apart, and the youth are suffering from a lack of positive exposure, mentorship, and creative outlets. ReBirth's: Arts Intensive is 1 of only 2 summer/after-school arts programs in Bridgeport, CT.

Anticipated Impact

This program, which enrolled 15 youth this summer of 2017 and aims to enroll 30-40 this school year, is designed to consecutively follow students as they age. It is our goal to provide training and mentorship to the same group of youth as they grow and develop each summer and throughout the school year. Our objective is to witness and track the transformational change and progress of our students starting at ages 10-15, and each year thereafter. Once becoming a high school graduate or young adult it is our goal to continue supporting students in their endeavors. This program provides students with a set of skills and techniques which will set them up for future success and add to the confidence needed for them to pursue goals with perseverance. Additionally, we aim for students to use the talents and abilities acquired from our training to earn a collegiate scholarship, enroll in a college or university, work as a youth leader within R.A.I., and secure employment or internship opportunities in the future.

We are focusing on this age group because we have analyzed statistics from the Department of Juvenile Justice, which indicate that in  2015 there were 360 juvenile arrest in the city of Bridgeport, 222 of those arrest were of children 15 years old or younger. We recognize these numbers and personal experience as evidence of a crisis and significant need for constructive, creative, and intellectually engaging programs for youth of this age.

It was anticipated that through the Summer Arts Intensive, the lives of 15 students and their families would be impacted, and our mission was accomplished! But with the proper fundraising, we could carry this program into the school year and increase that impact number to 50-100 Bridgeport youth by the end 2017.
