Re:borN Dance Interactive Presents: ONE

Dear Friend,

My name is Boroka Nagy, a Hungarian-born, New York City-bred choreographer residing in Orange County. I am thrilled to share that my dance company, Re:borN Dance Interactive, will be performing its first evening-length Interactive Performance Exhibit! "ONE" is the show we have been working up to since our inception in 2016, and the event that our supporters have been waiting for. Transforming SAVANT NoBo in Los Angeles’ Chinatown into our performance venue, we will present a unique, full-length program featuring eight dancers performing themes on community on October 7, 2017. Audience members will be immersed in a gallery-type presentation, and given the opportunity to enter the performance space and participate to the extent of their preference.

The thematic content of this work stems from an extensive research I began last year on community. With the social trends of the 21st century, researchers have noted a decline in the ideas and functions of community. I have felt this decline personally: my longings to experience it on a deeper level have been left unmet. Community can be categorized in many ways—as an identity, a place, a spirituality, a natural living system—yet they all serve as a source of belonging. Taking inspiration from numerous thinkers from around the world—of the African activist Desmond Tutu, the German sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies, and of the Americans: Robert Putnam, David Bohm, and Paul Born—I sought to bring a vision of community to life. Art flourishes during times of inadequacies within the human state, so at this time especially, I wish for the audience to be filled with human proximity, as members who are welcomed into the performance and encouraged to be active participants. To quote Re:borN’s mission, my hope is that the piece will “exists as a social and emotional exchange between all participants, experienced as a journey through physical and emotional time and space.”

We have already been rehearsing for months, and I’m finishing up setting choreography on the dancers. The space is booked, and my fabulous tech team is being assembled. Now, in order to pay my professional performers and technical crew what they deserve require the support of the community. I am writing to ask for your help in funding this production.

I’m hoping to raise a minimum of $7,000 through this Hatchfund campaign. This money will go directly towards artist fees for the dancers and designers, technical crew, and final production expenses including performance venue and rehearsal space costs, sets, costumes, videography/photography, marketing, insurance, and lighting and sound equipment. Any money raised above this goal will go towards an increase in collaborating artists’ fees, with first priority to the dancers.

Finally: I hope you will join us for "ONE" in October. I am so eager to show you what we have been pouring our hearts into, and your support is truly appreciated.

With Excitement and Gratitude,

Boroka Nagy, Artistic Director/Choreographer

P.S. We've chosen to work with Hatchfund, a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase support and visibility for the arts. In contrast to other online fundraising services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, all contributions to Hatchfund are tax-deductible, and the total amount pledged will come to the project, unlike other crowdfunding sites that take a 7-10% fee for using the platform. As a trade-off, donors are asked to make two small donations in addition - 5% to Hatchfund and another 5% to cover credit card processing costs - but these are also tax-deductible.
