    NEW [a short film] - UPDATE: March 24, 2016

Hello supporters! NEW played its last film festival a few weeks ago, as part of the Pensacon Comic Con in Pensacola, Florida… and we won the jury prize for best short film. The trophy pictured above recently arrived in the mail. This will likely be NEW's last regular festival screening, so, a nice way to wrap up the run!

Just a reminder, the film is free for all to view at https://vimeo.com/144333900

We've had some great press coverage since the film debuted online. Most notably this great write-up at sci-fi site io9.com, which has driven a lot of traffic to us: http://io9.gizmodo.com/this-short-film-about-love-after-death-is-pretty-heartb-1741548046

Also I did this interview about the film for FilmRelish.com:

That's all for now. As always, thank you for your support.

    NEW [a short film] - UPDATE: October 26, 2015

Heads up, NEW supporters & fans: NEW is coming soon, to an internet near you! On Monday, November 2, 2015, shortly after midnight, NEW will debut online. Free to view, of course! That's one week from today. Don't worry, I'll send out a reminder on the day.

Regarding digital perks: the plan is to email all donors on that same day with the digital perks they have coming. If you donated $15 or more to our project, that will include a PDF file of the film script, and also a PDF of the short story adaptation. You'll also receive a link where you'll be able to download a digital copy of the film, should you want to do so.

Regarding physical perks: All the DVDs and BluRay discs were mailed out around the end of August. If your donation to either (or both) of our crowdfunding campaigns totaled $100 or more, you should have received one. (If you didn't get yours, please contact me directly: john@johnfilms.com.)

As always, thank you for your support!

    NEW [a short film] - UPDATE: August 9, 2015

Hello, supporters! We're very happy to report that the discs and other physical perks you were promised are in hand. Watch your mailboxes! One more big "thank you" for your patience is in order. Thank you.

Once perks are mailed out, we're planning an online release for NEW, probably around the end of August. Those of you who were promised a digital download of the film will be able to do so at that time. More news on that to come soon.

Finally, we have two festival screenings to announce: NEW will be playing at the World Science Fiction Convention in Spokane, Washington, on August 22. Pretty cool. Then in October, NEW returns to the UK for a screening at the Hyperdrive Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival in East Sussex.

    NEW [a short film] - UPDATE: February 2, 2015

Hello, beautiful supporters! At last, the long-awaited Blu-Rays and DVDs of NEW are coming together. We're assembling a really nice deluxe edition, and I'm really pretty excited about that. In addition to the film itself we're throwing in a bunch of bonus material: you'll get visual effects demos, production stills, and a fairly deranged behind-the-scenes video that was shot during production, completely without my knowledge. Anyone who donated at the $100 level or above will be seeing one of these babies in their mailbox, sometime in March!

Meanwhile, we're also researching the very best strategy for releasing the film online. After working so long and hard, we feel we need to do more than just throw it up onto YouTube. We'll keep you all posted as plans come together.

Finally, we have another festival screening to announce this week. Come on out if you can to Dam Short Film Festival, a four-day celebration of short films in Boulder City, Nevada! NEW plays Thursday, February 5. LINK: http://www.damshortfilm.org/

    More soon!

    NEW [a short film] - UPDATE: November 29, 2014

With members of the cast, crew, and VIP donors in attendance, we screened NEW at the Raven Film Center in Healdsburg, CA on November 20. It was a party atmosphere, with hors d'oeuvres aplenty and a champagne toast. Missed it? There's a big photo gallery you can check out here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk5T1rTE

Also in November: NEW had four screenings at the Napa Valley Film Festival (http://napavalleyfilmfest.org/ ) and a screening in Laughlin, Nevada at the Venturist Society's cryonics conference.

    Up next:

The BFI in London is currently presenting a huge program – pardon me: “programme” – of films under the banner “Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder.” NEW screens December 5 with a selection of short films curated by our friends at the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival. (link:

On December 6, the inaugural Other Worlds Austin Film Festival will bring NEW to the Lone Star State. We get two screenings at this brand-new, all-sci-fi festival! (link: http://www.otherworldsaustin.com/2014-film-line-up )

And on December 13 we play San Francisco, at the Another Hole in the Head film festival! (link: http://sfindie.com/festivals/another-hole-in-the-head-film-festival-2014/ )

Finally, we'd like to update all our supporters with a long-overdue progress report on your perks. DVD and Blu-Ray disks are in the works! We're planning to have a very nice special edition disk of NEW available early in 2015, loaded with lots of cool extras. At that time ALL the physical thank-you items will be going out to our supporters! Thank you for your patience.

    UPDATE: September 13, 2014

Over the recent Labor Day weekend, Sheila and I had the pleasure of attending Film Fest Twain Harte up in California's gold country. This was NEW's U.S. premiere, and our first chance to see the film on the big screen and with an audience. It was a gratifying experience. In the Q&A period that followed, people asked lots of smart questions. It was obvious they were connecting to and appreciating the film.

The weekend was made even more memorable for me because so many of my immediate family were in attendance: both my sisters and one brother (and all their spouses) made it out for the Saturday screening, along with my mother, who had just celebrated her 93rd birthday the previous weekend.

And at the Sunday night awards gala, NEW won the Critic's Choice award from SF Chronicle film reviewer G. Allen Johnson.

We'd like to thank Zack Gold and everyone from Film Fest Twain Harte for making us feel welcome.

Next up for NEW are screenings that are for us closer to home: in November, we're going to the always-awesome Napa Valley Film Festival! There will be several chances to see it there over the 5 days of the fest. (More info: http://www.napavalleyfilmfest.org/ )

We're also making plans, finally, for the long-promised public screening. This event is also planned for November and we'll be making a formal announcement about that soon! Stay tuned.

And as always, thanks for your support!

UPDATE: July 9, 2014 - Picture and Sound

A quick hello everyone, to inform you that NEW is polishing up nicely. On June 27, I spent the day in San Francisco with colorist Gary Coates. We went over the color grading he'd done on the film, and I got a crash course on how to fine-tune things to get the final look we want. At this point, I can tell you NEW is looking more beautiful than ever before.

It's sounding beautiful too: multi-talented actor/performing artist/composer Pete Stringfellow is creating an original musical score for the film. Pete also plays the role of the bartender in the final scene, so you'll be seeing his name roll by a couple of times in NEW's credits.

And as for WHEN you can see it… it won't be long now. Considering it's now July, certainly we're a bit behind where we'd hoped we'd be by now… and I thank you all for your patience. Hang in there. Your perks are coming! We expect to have an announcement about a VIP screening soon too.

    Thanks for your support!

I'm attempting to embed a YouTube video in today's update. It includes a report on our May 4 screening in London... AND it also includes a sneak peek: the first 60 seconds of NEW! Finally you can see a bit of what YOUR DONATIONS MADE POSSIBLE, and what we've been working on for so long.

As I type this, our campaign to raise finishing funds has entered its final 12 hours. If you know some folks who'd like to be as cool as you, and support this project too, won't you sent them our way? You know where to send them: www.NewTheMovie.com !

As always, thank you for your support! Happily, the next update you receive should be all about how this movie is FINISHED, and when you'll be getting your thank-you rewards. Thanks for hanging in there.

Here's a picture from last Friday morning. What is it? It's our film NEW, squirting through the Intertubes on its way to London! Note the time of day. There are still some bleary eyes here at NEW HQ. But, we're all celebrating that our film has been safely delivered and will premiere May 4 as planned at the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival!

IMPORTANT: If you are planning to attend and are interested in the free ticket to the screening, please let us know ASAP so we can get you on the list. If you gave at least $15 to last year's campaign you are eligible.

Kudos to our fantastic & talented visual effects department, led by VFX Supervisor Skot Christopherson, all of whom worked overtime to get the last of the effects shots fine-tuned and in place. The version of NEW that will debut in London will also feature an improved sound mix and some preliminary color correction too.

To all you supporters who donated last year to our first crowdfunding campaign, thanks again. We never could have gotten to this point without you. Thank you as well for your patience with this long process. The perks you were promised are coming!

We also want to thank our new supporters, and those who came back to support us once again in our current finishing funds campaign over on Indiegogo.com. Your generous donations will allow us to polish up NEW even further over the next few weeks. The new campaign is very close to the $4000 mark today. It's been slow but steady progress. We can now continue to take contributions through May 17... but that is IT!

Please help us spread the word far and wide about NEW! Email it, Facebook it, Tweet about it, shout it from the rooftops: we're making a smart sci-fi film on a shoestring here and every dollar helps. That URL again: www.NewTheMovie.com!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT today, everyone, about our shot film NEW. It's about a world premiere – and a race to the finish!

We’re very pleased to announce that NEW will see its WORLD PREMIERE at the end of April. In London, no less, at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival!

Does that mean the film is done? Well, not quite. But it’s home stretch time. My screenwriting instructors always told me a ticking clock makes things more exciting. Well, now we’ve got one. The film absolutely HAS to be done in April. And to make things more suspenseful, we’re out of money, too. It’s a familiar story in the indie film world: we blew our post budget on production.

That’s why we’ve just launched second, final (we promise!) crowdfunding campaign. It's a new campaign, but the same URL:

www.NewTheMovie.com (please check it out now!)

The original project page at Hatchfund (formerly USA Projects) will remain up.

You can always visit it at http://www.hatchfund.org/project/new_a_short_film

We're extremely grateful for the assistance we received from Hatchfund, and from you, all our supporters. Our new campaign is at Indiegogo.com, where we can run a different kind of campaign and hopefully reach a slightly different audience.

Check out our all-new pitch video! It includes exclusive, never-seen-before clips from the film, so you can finally get a glimpse of all the wonderful-ness that’s been going on: wwwNewTheMovie.com

Many of you reading this have already contributed generously to our film. So if you're unable to donate again we totally understand. But please have a look, chip in if you can, and share, share, share! It’s all about spreading the word about this project.

Just to make it easier, here are words that are cut & paste-ready for your social media:

This one’s short enough for Twitter:
This cool short film going to @scifilondon Film Festival needs to raise a few $ to finish in time! www.NewTheMovie.com @indiegogo RT!

And here’s a longer one, for Facebook or emails or whatnot:
This cool short film has just been accepted to the Sci-Fi London Film Festival & needs to raise a few $ to finish in time! www.NewTheMovie.com Check it out, share around, and maybe chip in!

    We’re ALMOST there, everyone.

It’s barely three months since production wrapped on NEW, but I've been looking at photos of the cast & crew on location and it seems like another era to me. Or an alternate universe, maybe. The noise and hustle, the focused effort, the long hours. The fatigue. The fun. The stress! The people, many of whom I barely knew when we started and who I missed so much when it was over. And now it’s just me, alone in a room, hunkered down with the footage. Trying to piece together hundreds of angles and takes into 28 scenes that tell the story. That’s editing.

Last week we made the big deadline, the one we’d been working towards all year: we sent out NEW for its first film festival submission. The film is not finished – what went out was a work-in-progress – but even at this point it's looking pretty awesome.* Much of that is thanks to the concerted efforts of the VFX team: Clayton Douglas, Alejandro R. Torres, Michael Rosen, and team supervisor Skot Christopherson.

So: the effects are looking cool, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the performances are uniformly strong. This is really mine to screw up. I'm feeling that pressure.

As I continue to refine the edit, the VFX team will keep feeding me shots, filling the last of the holes. Once we lock picture, there’s color correction and final sound mix. Plenty to keep us busy. Simultaneously, more film festival submissions will be going out. And if all goes as planned, NEW will be a complete and finished film sometime in January.

Once that happens, we can finally turn our attention to fulfilling the perks that were promised all of you. Thanks everyone, for your patience and support.

Our film NEW wrapped principal photography on July 30, 2013, after 6 days of shooting.

Dropping the editorial "we" for a moment, let me say that making NEW was an amazing, grueling, wonderful, exhausting experience. I’ve never worked harder, never stressed harder and never had as much fun doing anything in my life. My feet still hurt. I lost 10 pounds.

But let me be clear, it wasn't only me: everybody worked their butts off. The cast and crew labored tirelessly for long hours, more often than not in their socks out of respect for the homes we were shooting in. I have nothing but gratitude for everyone who bought into this dream that is NEW: actors, crew, and also the friends, family and strangers whose donations made this production possible in the first place. Thank you again!

I have yet to review the footage in depth, but I know in my gut we got everything we set out to get. Every time I looked at the monitor I saw something beautiful, and every time an actor opened his or her mouth something wonderful came out.

While the visual effects department is already busy designing our effects shots, editing the film is next up for me and I can’t wait.

    More to come!

    Thank you!

It’s been pretty busy around here as we prepare to make NEW. One crucial task has been finding the perfect cast. Special recognition must go out to rock star producer Don R. Lewis, who worked his connections, beat the bushes, and turned over stones to assemble this talented team! Thanks to his efforts, our stars have aligned… and here they are:

    Jared Abrahamson
In the lead role of HUGH, Jared will portray a 69-year-old man who emerges from centuries in cryonic deep-freeze to find he’s been restored to perfect health – and the bloom of youth. Jared hails from northern Manitoba, Canada. He moved west to Vancouver to try his hand at acting, and landed his first professional role as the lead in the Hallmark movie “Finding a Family.” Jared also trains in mixed martial arts and Muay Thai kickboxing.

    Joslyn Jensen
Joslyn plays CANDACE, Hugh’s wife, who accompanies her husband on his cryonic one-way trip to the future. Joslyn is an actor and musician from Brooklyn, NY. She wowed us with her performance in the 2011 indie feature WITHOUT — and we weren’t alone in that. Joslyn received many accolades for her work in the film, including a special jury prize from the Florida Film Festival for Outstanding Debut Performance.

    Jennifer Lafleur
Jennifer will be a familiar face to fans of filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass, as she has appeared in many of their films including JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME and THE DO-DECA-PENTATHLON. In our film NEW, she’ll take on the part of NOELLE, the historian and case worker tasked with easing Hugh and Candace into their new lives in the 23rd century.

We’re thrilled to have this amazing lineup of talent onboard for NEW.

    More updates coming soon!

    Hello Team NEW,

It's been pretty busy here at NEW HQ as we prepare to make our film. Plans are in place to begin shooting in just over one month, and before then there's plenty to do!

Our #1 priorities have been finding the perfect cast and finding the perfect filming locations. We've been having some success with the former (though I can't announce any names quite yet) but we're reaching out to you all for suggestions on the latter.

We're looking for an ultra-modern designer home to represent the futuristic environment our main characters find themselves living in. It needs to be in the San Francisco Bay Area (preferably north bay) and the owners would have to agree to a small film crew working in their home for about three days. We can pay the owners a stipend for the inconvenience and offer them screen credit and other perks as well.

The pictures here are of a home in Sonoma that would have been perfect but is unfortunately unavailable. But this is the kind of look we're looking for: austere, ultra modern, but situated in nature (trees).

If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear them! Please email us at john[at]johnfilms.com. Thanks.

    More updates coming soon!

Great news: yesterday WE HIT OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL for our science fiction film, NEW! Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated and helped spread the word. Because of you, we'll be able to make the film we've been burning to do for a year now! We plan to be shooting soon, and have a movie for you all to see before the end of the year.

USA Projects has extended our campaign through May 24, so if any of you reading this have been meaning to give but haven't yet, you still have time! The $22K goal represented the minimum budget for the project - any additional funds will be put to good use. That's a promise! Thanks!

With deep appreciation from the entire NEW crew,

It's been a long 7 weeks but we're brimming with gratitude for friends, family and total strangers who have generously given of their time, money, and effort to help us make this cinematic dream a reality. WE'RE NEARLY THERE. THANK YOU!

    Hello Team NEW!

With just 2 days left on the clock, we are just about $4000 short of making our goal of $22,000, the money we need to make our film, NEW. If we don't hit that number by midnight Wednesday -- we lose it all!

It's now or never. Do or die!

We thank you for your generous support. Tonight, we have a special request of you all. It won't take long, and it won't cost you a dime.

We want you to send an email. Tell people about us. Tell your friends, colleagues, or co-workers. Tell your family. Tell people who might be interested in a cool sci-fi movie. I'll bet you know some.

We've learned one thing in 7 weeks of crowd-funding: emails WORK. They get results. They spur donations. We've already emailed pretty much everyone we know. We need you to work YOUR network!

    Please, help us out TONIGHT!

To help YOU out, we'll paste a sample email below, which you can copy and paste into your email program. and tweak as you see fit. You can send a group email to many, or a few separate emails to individuals. Just send 'em!

Together we're going to do this! Thanks everyone. Smooches for all,

    Dear friends, colleagues, and family,

I'm writing to you tonight with an urgent message. I want to tell you all about an exciting independent filmmaker and his project, one I've recently thrown my support behind.

The writer and director of the film is John Harden. [ customize this part: He's my little brother / a good friend I've known for many years (and/or) he's an independent screenwriter and director with numerous awards, film festivals and television screenings to his credit. ]

This summer he's assembling a talented team and making an original science fiction film called NEW. It's a cool concept and I have no doubt it will also be a great film which you'll all be seeing very soon!

Please take a look at the short teaser video here:

Then, consider donating to make it possible! Even a small donation of $5 or $10 will help. His campaign has only about 48 hours left. Right now they are about $4000 short of the $22,000 goal they must raise by 11:59 PM Pacific time, this Wednesday night (May 15).

IF THEY FAIL TO REACH THE GOAL, THEY GET NOTHING. All donors will be refunded their money!

Please consider supporting this worthy project. There are great thank-you rewards to be had, and your donation is tax-deductible.

If you need more convincing, just go to www.JohnFilms.com - you can see many of his past film projects there, and read about a life he's devoted to film-making. Make sure you check out LA VIE D'UN CHIEN (THE LIFE OF A DOG), a delightful short film about a French scientist who turns himself into a dog - it won multiple prizes, including Best Narrative Short Film at the 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival.

The clock is ticking! I'm convinced this project is worth supporting. Will you support it with me?

The photo above may serve as damning evidence that 7 weeks of crowd-funding has taken its toll. Then again, people DO like puppies.

These are the END TIMES, friends: the campaign for NEW concludes Wednesday night, May 15, at one minute to midnight, PST. But if we fail to reach our goal of $22,000 by then, it shall all be for naught. Everyone will have their donation refunded. And We. Get. Nothing!

That would be, as they say, a bummer.

To sweeten the pot and reward the procrastinators out there, we are now offering a choice of two BRAND NEW PERKS to anyone who can donate $200 or more! Please view this video: http://youtu.be/kUHv_lYNgRc - to learn more about how donating to the NEW campaign will bring wonderful fulfillment to your life.

Thank you for your support! Please share the link to this project with someone today: http://www.NewTheMovie.com

And check back for more updates soon.

Many people have stepped up in many ways, to give of their time and money and effort to support our cinematic aspirations. Here are just some of them:

The Arts Council of Sonoma County - http://www.artscouncilsc.com/
We would not be here on USA Projects at all, if not for the seminal support of our local arts organization. Thanks to John Moran and Jennifer Sloan and everyone at the council.

    USA Projects - http://www.usaprojects.org
Rose Kuo from the Film Society of Lincoln Center - http://www.filmlinc.com/
It's a honor to be invited to use the USA Projects platform to promote and fundraise for my work. USA Projects has supported us in many ways, notably by choosing NEW to receive April's Creative Vision Award: $5,000 in matching funds that have helped us immensely in approaching our goal. The guest judge who selected us to receive the award was Rose Kuo, so our deep appreciation goes to Rose as well.

    Armstrong Creates - http://armstrongcreates.com/
My boss, Tom Armstrong has been generous with his time, money, and resources to help me realize the dream of making NEW. It's all really quite counter-productive for him, because he knows if this project takes off in a big way I might have to quit working for him to go make the feature film version of NEW. That's just the kind of guy he is.

The American Cryonics Society - http://www.americancryonics.org/
Is cryonic preservation right for you? If you've been thinking it over, these are the folks to talk to! Edgar Swank, president of the society, has read the script and ACS has been a supporter of our effort from early on. An article about NEW will be forthcoming in the next issue of their magazine, Long Life.

    David Brin - http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/
Deep appreciation to this friend of NEW, the noted futurist and Hugo-award winning science fiction author, for great endorsements on his Facebook page and his blog, Contrary Brin. You should totally buy all his books. In hardcover!

The Latest Big News about NEW - April 23, 2013

    Hello everyone,

First we must give a huge "Thank You" to all of you who have donated to the "NEW" film budget campaign. You have our deepest appreciation. We'll do our best to spend every penny well and make the best film we can.

This is: We are honored to be chosen to receive the USA Projects Creative Vision Award - $5000 in matching funds! NEW beat out 24 other contenders for this honor. The judge was Rose Kuo, Executive Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York. (Thank you, Rose!)

It means from this point forward, anyone who donates will have their dollars doubled. (Up to $5000.) You heard that right. If you've not yet donated but have been meaning to give, there's really no better time!!

Can you donate today? (You know, like right now?)

A matching fund doesn't mean diddly unless some donations come in to be matched! Donating is easy, and you can get some cool thank-you perks, and a tax-deduction too.

Many small donations will matter every bit as much as large ones, as we head into the final days of the campaign. We've raised about $7000 so far -- which is terrific -- but we have a long way to go: $22,000. And only a few days to get there.

The campaign receives nothing. Everyone will be refunded their money. And we will be sad. Because we really believe in this film. We hope you'll make a small leap and believe in it, too. It will be, in all aspects, a "bigger" film than I've ever made before.

We'll take contributions as low as $1. But if you just can't swing it, we get it. Times are tough. You can still be an important part of the NEW team by telling people about us. www.NewTheMovie.com - blog it, email it, Facebook or Tweet it, whatever makes sense to you. Spreading the word is crucial!

Thank you so very much! Onward!
