Posted August 11, 2017Dear friends and supporters,
With the end of this past week, we reached what could be called 'just about the end' of production. It's not the absolute end, because we still have a couple of small things to shoot and some loose ends to tie up. But at this point we have at least 95% of the film shot, with footage stored on numerous hard drives at multiple locations around the greater Los Angeles area (you can never be too safe!), and the most physically and emotionally demanding parts of the shoot behind us.
Our editing team is now hard at work making an initial rough cut of the film. They have assembled about 25 minutes so far, and I am excited to see how things are coming together. There are many moments that are coming to life as I hoped they would, and many others where the film is taking on a life that I didn't quite expect.
We still have a lot of fine tuning, music recording, and sound designing left to do before the film will be ready to share, and I have no doubt that will entail a whole new journey. But the most challenging and unpredictable part of the process has come and gone, and I feel a great sense of both relief and wonder at how it all unfolded. In many respects, this has been a life-changing experience for me, and I have learned things through it that I could never have anticipated. I can't speak directly for the rest of our team; but I do believe that everyone found joy in the process, and that we all experienced moments, in between the typical absurdities of film production, where we felt a deeper sense of community, and caught glimpses of a free and truly collaborative way of working together.
Time will tell how much the finished film actually captures and conveys the experience behind it. But I do hope that, in the end, it will share that spirit of freedom and joy with you in a palpable way. I remain humbled that you chose to make this work possible, and grateful that you have accompanied us on this journey. As we work on the edit, we will also start sending out those thank you gifts that aren't reliant on the film being finished. I look forward to sharing those mementos with you. We'll also be putting together a website where we can better acknowledge your contribution and keep you updated on our progress.
Thank you again,
Posted July 21, 2017Dear friends,
With the end of our third week (and change) of filming, we are reaching a small hiatus as we prepare some of the most complex scenes in the film. In the meantime, I wanted to give you another glimpse of the work we've been doing. These days saw us welcome new cast members, do lots of street filming around the west side of Los Angeles, and mix in a couple more musical scenes, one in a local coffee shop and another in a fantastic performance space in the LA Arts District. Bouncing around between so many different locations presented plenty of challenges, but made for a lot of fun work as well. Making this film has given me a new way of experiencing life in Los Angeles, and I hope that the finished project will share that experience with all of you in a special way.
Posted July 09, 2017Dear supporters,
We are reaching the end of our second week of shooting. It has been another good week, and day by day I am more and more moved by the patience, grace, and skill of my collaborators, both behind and in front of the camera. I am extremely privileged to be working with such amazing people, and ever grateful for the ways in which you have made this work possible.
This week saw us filming in my apartment, on the Los Angeles Metro, and many places in between. I hope you will enjoy these glimpses behind the scenes, with photographs by Jonathan Timothy Stoner (Assistant Camera) and Susan Springer Anderson (Art Director).
Posted July 01, 2017Hello friends!
We are reaching the end of our first week of shooting. It has been a great week, both fun and intense, and we've got a lot of great footage in the (metaphorical) can.
I wanted to give you a quick glimpse of what the work has looked like. These are on-set photos from Day 4 of the shoot, taken by our great first AC, Jonathan Timothy Stoner.
For more updates and behind-the-scenes photos, check out our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BetweenDreamers. I am also trying to post update videos there, introducing members of our team and giving shout outs to you, our amazing supporters.
Thank-you again. We've taken some great steps this week, and couldn't have done any of it without all of you.
Posted June 27, 2017Hello friends and supporters of Between Dreamers,
After a few different delays, we are at last set to begin production tomorrow! While it has been a longer journey than anticipated to get to this point, the extra time has benefited the project greatly. We as a creative team have continued to develop the film, and the scope has actually expanded a bit, so that our film will now be a full-length film rather than a short film. This is exciting for a number of reasons, but most of all because it means that when all is said and done, we will have a much richer work of art to share with you.
We will do the majority of our filming between now and the middle of July, with an eye toward getting through a good bit of the editing process by the end of August. The next few weeks in particular will be very intense, but also a lot of fun, and I look forward to sharing glimpses of the process with you. I remain deeply grateful for your part in making this film possible. It is thanks to you that I have felt inspired to guide it to this point, and I can't wait to share the final project with you.
With continued thanks,
Posted January 20, 2017Dear friends and supporters,
I hope you have had a wonderful start to the New Year. I remain humbled and inspired by the incredible support you have given, and thrilled that you are a part of this film. The campaign here on Hatchfund went better than I could ever have imagined, and your participation only deepens my excitement as we continue to take steps toward production.
I wanted to give you an update regarding our progress. Because of a handful of factors, we had to reschedule the start of our filming, and have pushed it back from January until March. Though this means a bit of a delay, in the long run it will only strengthen the finished film and allow us time to put extra work into ensuring that the film we share with you - the film we could only have made through your support - is the strongest and most distinct work of art that it can be.
I will have more to share over the coming weeks, including some glimpses of our pre-production process. In the meantime, I cannot say thank-you enough for being a part of this journey.
