"An Illegal Start" - Theatre in the Merry Go-Round
- Theater Arts
Developed in the spring of 2017, An Illegal Start is an adaptation of the original 2007 script taliored specifically for performance at the Santa Monica Pier's historic Looff Hippodrome (better known as the "Merry Go-Round Building"). A full-scale 8-week run is scheduled for November 2017 through January 2018 in the same location. Funding is needed for insfrastructure, rent and publicity.
The play is absolutely unique in that it is the first time that an active, functioning merry go-round has been used as a stage.
An Illegal Start is set in 1980’s rural western Colorado, where an old merry go-round in a defunct amusement park becomes refuge for two young men after a near-fatal accident, catapulting an unlikely friendship into an intimately intertwined journey through the trials of two starkly different life paths.
Themes explored in this piece include friendship, love, race, life choices, small towns, alcoholism and war.
Since the Santa Monica Pier's Merry Go-Round Building is not a traditional performance space, we have very specific budgetary needs. First and foremost, of course, is seating. We will need to rent and store risers onsite. Plus we need to adapt the facility for use on each performance night, converting it from its day use entertaining carousel enthusiasts into a performance space each night. We also need to cover rent for rehearsal time and performance time and, of course, we need to compensate cast and crew for their time.
Anything that you can do to help would be most appreciated. Your support goes into something truly unique and special here, from the performed work to the performed space, it's all a one-of-a-kind experience! Thank you.
