I am excited to announce a fund raising campaign for a book of photographs that explores the neighborhood of North Philadelphia. The book, titled North Philadelphia, will be published in 2014 by the German publisher Kehrer Verlag.
As a teenager, I spent time working at a project in North Philadelphia started by my mother, artist Lily Yeh, converting abandoned lots, with the help of neighborhood residents, into sculpture gardens and community spaces. The experiences and interactions that I had there left a profound impression.
After a decade of working in China, photographing communities at the margins of Chinese society, I decided to return to the United States in 2008, at a time of economic crisis and look at disparities in my own country. North Philadelphia seemed the obvious place to start.
While it is a place of entrenched problems, it is also, to my mind, a place of complexity, beauty and possibility. The people that I have encountered there, years ago and recently, have stayed with me.
The completed publication will contain approximately 50 color plates and texts written by myself and other writers. It will be an edition of 1000 books. Contributions to this project are tax deductible and will go directly towards the books production. In gratitude for your support, I am offering a range of gifts, from copies of the book to limited edition prints. The costs of creating this book are significant, well beyond the stated goal. If the project goals are exceeded, additional contributions will further assist with other aspects of the books production. With your help, I look forward to realizing the project and getting the book out into the world. The book is my first monograph so it is particularly exciting for me. Thank you for your support. I am very grateful.
