Low End String Quartet, Sarah Lipstate commissioning project
On April 14, 2012 The Low End String Quartet will premiere two new works: one by Sarah Lipstate, and one by Zoe Keating. Zoe, Sarah, and the quartet will perform together at Center Stage in Reston, Virginia.
Zoe’s Keating’s commissioning fee, and a portion of Sarah Lipstate’s fee are being provided by the venue presenting the premiere performance. We still need to raise the remainder of Sarah’s fee, and money to cover adequate rehearsal time for the quartet to prepare for the performance.
This event, and this new repertoire, represents a major step forward for the Low End String Quartet. It is a rare opportunity to perform with several amazing artists, and an opportunity to add awesome new material to their repertoire. The ensemble plans to begin touring in 2013, and these pieces will be the featured works on their touring program. This project will help the group make the transition from "local" band to professional touring ensemble. Help us bring chamber music to places where it's never been before.
About the Low End String Quartet (LESQ):
LESQ is a re-imagining of the classical model. The instrumentation differs, adding a bass, dropping a violin, and swapping a guitar where the viola should be. All instruments are amplified. This "new and improved" string quartet lineup is much better suited to alternative venues than the classical model, and is better equipped for rumbling your ribcage.
About Sarah Lipstate:
Noveller is the solo project of Brooklyn-based guitarist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Handling the electric guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer.
Her one-woman guitar soundscapes have captured the attention of NPR, The Village Voice, Time Out New York, and The Wall Street Journal. In addition to recording and performing music as Noveller, Lipstate has recently starting working with author/producer/composer Nathan Larson on several feature film scores. Lipstate has collaborated with several renowned musicians, including live improvised duo performances with Carla Bozulich, David Wm. Sims, and Lee Ranaldo. She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave, Parts & Labor, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars” Ensemble, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble.
She released her first two full-length albums on Brooklyn noise label No Fun Productions in 2009. In 2010, Lipstate started her own imprint, Saffron Recordings, as a vehicle for releasing the Noveller full-length ‘Desert Fires’ and a split LP between Noveller and unFact (David Wm. Sims of the Jesus Lizard) titled ‘Bleached Valentine’. Her latest full-length, ‘Glacial Glow’, was released jointly through Saffron Recordings and Weird Forest in May 2011.
Recently, Lipstate performed at the Suoni Per Il Popolo fest in Montreal, Decibel Festival in Seattle, and Unsound Festival in Krakow. Noveller has toured the U.S. and internationally, at times supporting acts such as Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, U.S. Girls, Aidan Baker, and Emeralds.
