Connecting Communities Through Music-Recording Project in New York
I'm about to record an album of original work in Ornette Coleman's old Harmolodic Studio in Harlem, now named Stadium Red. This project represents a crossroad for me as performer and composer. I came to New York for several reasons: to "get a jazz education", to explore new approaches as a player and composer, to hear and hang with the great players, and to shed, shed, shed.
The new album features new pieces and arrangements inspired by my experiences in New York. My music sets moods, paints pictures and tells stories. I like a beautiful melody, and chords with emotional depth. You'll hear traces of Norwegian folk music, odd meters & rhythms and the blues. This music embodies the expansive landscapes of the North, the sounds of the City or even a toddler falling asleep on the subway.
The trumpet is a complicated musical life partner, it can wear you out - it doesn't always co-operate. There are days when I wonder if we really were made for each other… While researching new strategies and approaches to playing and music making I have been encouraged to go deeper into my own personal life, revisiting physical habits and thought patterns, releasing "junk thoughts" and clearing clutter. It has been a rewarding experience.
I need to raise a minimum of 10 K to make the album project happen. The money will pay for the players, for recording, mixing and mastering, duplication, basic promotion and physical and digital release. Over-funding is inconceivable; my artists have committed to the project come rain come shine - with more money I can actually pay them what they are worth. And I would also be able to beef up the promotion; secure national radio play, start planning a tour and so on.
As a supporter I consider you a vested partner in the process. So I'll be keeping you posted on how the music is coming along: the tunes, recording concept, featured musicians and so on. As we record and mix the tracks, you'll get to hear what the music sounds like and I will post sneak peeks of the album art work - you can even order your own digital/print version.
Since you'll be getting a pretty good impression of what the project is going to be, I'll invite you to cast your vote on the album title. Do it when you donate or later: You can choose one of my alternatives or suggest your own.
Finally, once you're onboard I'll be suggesting some easy ways to let your friends know about this music. I'm a live and analog person at heart, but I do believe using social media can help connect with great people who love the same music as you and I do. So let's spread the word!
The CD release will be in Feb/March 2013. You will receive an exclusive pre-release copy before then and a healthy discount on all further CD purchases. You are cordially and personally invited to hang with us at a release party near you - there will be at least 3 of them: on both US coasts - and in Norway!
Thank you for supporting my project, it means a great deal to me - together we're keeping music live and alive!
Special thanks to: Stadium Red, Tyler Mc Diarmid, Ingrid Jensen, Ralph Alessi, Laurie Frink, Lenny Pickett, Rasmuson Foundation Sarah at USA Projects, Heather Courtney, Faline Min, Fred Cirksena, the musicians and a big XOX to my wife Annie B.
